Harper combined the basics of his favorite classic singers/songwriters to achieve his unusual funky soul
, handcrafted acoustics sound. These included Jimi Hendrix, and '90s "jam bands" such as Blues Traveler
, Hootie & the Blowfish
, and Phish
. His taste for music attracted critics and college kids alike. Although he never had a hit album, his work sold consistently. He toured constantly, ensuring him a solid, dedicated fan base. Harper went back to the drawing board when it came to recording his fifth studio effort. He has circled the world countless times by then, so he unsurprisingly was assertive about it in his songs. This inspired "Diamonds on the Inside" which appeared in March 2003. His latest album was issued under the names of him and the Blind Boys of Alabama
, which he toured with in early '04. "There Will Be a Light," was released in September of 2004.
