History

The Crow Indians inhabited Montana and Wyoming around 1700. They had migrated from the Great Lakes. The Crow can still be found in Montana. Humans had been in the area for 2100 years as indicated by a pictograph south of Billings. Apsáalooke is the Crow's true name and means people or large beaked bird. The Crow lived in tipis made from Bison hide and wooden poles. The Crow were noted for their large tipis and their fondness of horses. In 1914 the horse herds were 30,000 - 40,000. By 1921 the government had eradicated them to about 1,000. The nomadic Crow were also fond of dogs.
