History
Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were the 1st to sail down the border of Missouri on the Mississippi river in 1673. Their mission was to find out where the river ended. Robert de LaSalle claimed the Louisiana Territory for France in 1682.
The Mississippi river served as both communication and transportation until the railroads in the 19th century. The major industry was trade with the Indians. The favored mode of transportation was the canoe & pirogue.
Immigrants started to flood the state by 1720. Barges and keelboats were added to the modes of transportation. Phillippe François Renault brought the 1st blacks as slaves to work the lead mines and search for gold.
