History
The lore of the West is filled with stories about Kansas. The herds of bison drew the nomadic tribes to Kansas. Spanish conquistadors 1st explored the region in the 16th century. Later the price of furs would bring adventurers to Kansas to trap game.In 1803 Kansas joined the US as part of the Louisiana Purchase. It was called the Great American Desert by 19th century explorers.
The Civil War's 1st battlefield was in Kansas. Kansas had a number of cattle trails in the Wild West. Freedmen called "Exodusters" as well as European immigrants flooded to Kansas with the railroads. Kansas' economy was based on wheat and other crops throughout much of its history. Oil and railroads supplemented the economy. Since the mid 40s the agriculture industry has given way to manufacturing.
