NFL History

The NFL started off with 20 teams in 1920 and was called the American Professional Football Association in Canton, Ohio. The name was changed in 1921 and again in 1922. Now it has 32 teams in 2 conferences - American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference has 4 divisions with 4 teams in each.

There are 17 weeks in the regular season but each team has a bye during that period so they play 16 games. The teams play 6 games against divisional rivals. The season starts the last Thursday after Labor Day.

Six teams from the AFC and six teams from the NFC go on to play in the postseason Playoffs which leads to the Super Bowl. The week after the Super bowl. selected players play in the Pro Bowl.

The NFL games draw almost 70,000 fans per game but doesn't compare the the MLB in total attendance since they play a longer schedule of 162 games plus playoffs.
