Early Franchise Years
The Pistons started out as the NBL's Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons in 1948. The owner, Fred Zollner, manufactured pistons. Fred Zollner brokered the BAA & NBL merger into the NBA at his kitchen table. George Yardley led the Pistons to the Finals in 1955 & 1956 but lost on both occasions.
In 1957 they moved to Detroit. During the 60s Detroit had superstars like Dave DeBusschere, Dave Bing and Bob Lanier but team play was sub par. DeBusschere became the youngest player coach in the NBA but was traded to the Knicks for Howard Komives and Walt Bellamy. DeBusschere led the Knicks to a couple of NBA titles. Dave Bing and Bob Lanier brought some excitement to the team but they were up against division rivals the Bucks with Lew Alcindor and the Bulls. Detroit changed hands in 1974 and the new owner, Bill Davidson, moved them to the suburb of Pontiac.
