History
Dallas was pursing a NBA franchise in 1979 as their last NBA team had moved to San Antonio in 1973.
In 1980 the NBA owners voted to admit the Dallas team. The name comes from the TV show Maverick. It turns out that James Garner, the star of the show, was a member of the ownership group. There was a bit of controversy with UT Arlington Mavericks.
The Mavs drafted Kiki Vandeweghe but he held out and was traded. The trade along with a 1st round pick in 1986 yielded Rolando Blackman in 1981 and Sam Perkins in 1984.
In their debut game the Mavericks stunned San Antonio with a 103-92 upset.
