The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League Baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since the 1969 season, they have played in the Eastern Division of the National League.

Founded in 1883, the National League's Philadelphia Phillies are the longest standing one-name, one-location team in all professional American sports. Named for a verbal shorthand of their city of residence, the Phillies replaced the Worcester, Massachusetts Brown Stockings in the National League.

The trade and free agent wires for the Phillies were hot during the second half of November of '05. On November 23, 2005, the Phillies traded first baseman Jim Thome to the Chicago White Sox in return for centerfielder Aaron Rowand. Only five days later, Billy Wagner left Philadelphia and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies for 4 years 43 million dollar contract. On January 5, 2006, the Phillies signed ex-Seattle pitcher Ryan Franklin to a 1 year contract worth 2.6 million dollars. On January 26, they added veteran reliever Arthur Rhodes in a trade with the Cleveland Indians, for outfielder Jason Michaels.

Retired numbers

  • Grover Cleveland Alexander played in the era before Major League players wore numbers; the Phillies have honored him with the "P" logo from the 1915 season, their first World Series appearance.
  • Chuck Klein wore many numbers while with the Phillies, including 1, 3, 8, 26, 29, and 36. The Phillies wore the Old English "P" during his first six seasons; thus, they chose to use it to honor Klein.
