Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez after achieving "superstardom" throughout Latin America. Shakira is recognized for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach. She maintains an extraordinary degree of control over her music, since she wrote or at least co-wrote most of her own material. She also gained a reputation as one of 'Latin music's most ambitiously poetic lyricists'.

Wishing to be more successful, Shakira signed on Emilio Estefan as her manager and producer. Gloria Estefan, his wife, offered to translate "Oios Asi" into English for Shakira, and the idea of a crossover seemed within reach. Shakira decided she herself would learn English so she could write it herself. She showed up on MTV Unplugged, and took home Unplugged-related trophies for Best Female Pop Vocal and Best Female Rock Vocal.
