Initially Def Leppard was the leader of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal but lost the crown to Iron Maiden. In the 80s the band opened for Ozzy Osbourne and Blackfoot. In 1984 the band was even more popular than The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and Journey according to a US Gallup poll.
